Thinking and acting strategically at global, regional, local and national levels |

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to counter the paralysing impact of the belief
that there are no longer any political choices in a globalised word by presenting
a series of ten propositions about alternative responses to globalisation.
The propositions are illustrated with a range of predominantly Australian
and Canadian examples designed to illuminate arguments which can too easily
become overly general and abstract.
The central argument of the paper is that globalisation involves a range
of contradictory and contested processes which provide new possibilities
as well as threats to communities concerned with promoting relationship
of diversity, solidarity and sustainability. The central challenge is to
recognise the connections between action at different levels of geographical
space and political governance and to think and act at a range of levels
without losing our grounding in the particularity of our own home place.
